Wall Street Journal Quotes Matthew Sanderson on Declared Mistrial of Alleged Chinese Agent In New York
A mistrial was declared Monday in the trial of former New York state aide Linda Sun as jurors deadlocked over allegations that she became rich from acting as a Chinese agent.
The jury foreman told U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn that jurors were deadlocked on the 19 charges against Sun and her husband, Chris Hu. The case went to the jury on Dec. 12 after a month-long trial during which around 50 witnesses testified, though deliberations hit scheduling snags that lengthened the process.

“The government swung and missed here due to a strong effort by defense counsel,” said Matthew Sanderson, a lawyer in Washington at Caplin & Drysdale. But he said he believes the government will continue to bring FARA cases in the future because it is a useful tool for prosecutors.
