EX-FARA CHIEF LANDS AT CAPLIN: Heather Hunt, the former longtime head of DOJ’s FARA Unit, has joined Caplin & Drysdale as a senior counsel. Hunt stepped down from the department last fall after more than 40 years with the FARA Unit — including 17 years as its chief.

Hunt oversaw the FARA team during special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, which reinvigorated interest in the World War II-era foreign agent statute and ushered in a new era of aggressive enforcement that continues to this day.

At Caplin, Hunt will advise clients on FARA matters, which she said in an interview won’t actually be different than her previous role. “My whole career, I focused on helping organizations and individuals comply with FARA,” she told PI. “I worked on getting organizations and individuals to comply with FARA, and that's what I'm just continuing to do. … I'm just doing it in the private sector.”

Still, her insight will be hugely valuable for clients working to navigate the notoriously vague statute. “I can provide a different perspective, ... just a way that other people might not be able to look at it, as to what direction things seem to be going and, … honestly, how the FARA Unit looks at things generally,” Hunt told PI.
