Caplin & Drysdale Attorneys Contribute to ABA State Tax Guide Helping Military Members Using VITA

04.03.2023

As part of a program organized by the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, Caplin & Drysdale’s Charles Ruchelman, Melissa Wiley, Ross Sharkey, and Eleanor VanderMeulen contributed to the 2023 Military State Tax Guide. The guide is used as a reference by U.S. military members and their return preparers to research questions regarding state and local jurisdictions’ income tax filing requirements and the tax laws that are specific to members of the military. Our attorneys updated the information for four different jurisdictions in the 2023 guide, providing a valuable resource for the servicemembers who do so much for our country.

U.S. Military Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (“VITA”) programs provide free state and federal tax consultations and return preparation services to members of the military. Volunteers at VITA centers typically only receive IRS training related to federal tax filings, and not state tax.  Thus, they rely heavily on the information in the State Tax Guide to properly advise military taxpayers.  Members of the ABA tax community have volunteered each year to review each state’s information in the guide to make sure the next guide has the correct and up-to-date information.
