On February 24, 2015 Tax Notes reported that President Obama announced his intention to nominate Caplin & Drysdale's Cono R. Namorato to be the next Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice's Tax Division. Charles P. Rettig of Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez PC praised the nomination, saying Namorato is "amazingly well qualified." Rettig added, "He knows, understands and respects the history and traditions of the Tax Division and its relationship with the Internal Revenue Service."

Mr. Namorato served in the Tax Division throughout the 1970s, including as deputy assistant attorney general, and he was director of the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility from 2004 to 2006. His government service began in the 1960s when he served as a special agent in the precursor to the IRS Criminal Investigation division.  Mr. Namorato was with Caplin & Drysdale for 25 years before joining the IRS in 2004, and he rejoined the firm when he left the Service in 2006.  For the full story, please visit Tax Notes' website (subscription required).
